Review by Kathy Parsons
Lake Song is the companion solo piano songbook to Greg Maroney’s solo piano album by the same name. All fourteen pieces from the recording are included, transcribed by Maroney himself. I have had the honor and pleasure of proof-reading and editing all of Greg’s songbooks and can confirm that these are note-for-note transcriptions that are as close to matching the recordings as possible. Greg is an excellent pianist, so some of these pieces can be a bit of a challenge, but they are all very beautiful and fun to play. The biggest challenge is that several pieces are written in difficult key signatures (lots of sharps!), but other than that and some fast runs and a few stretches of a tenth, most upper intermediate and early-advanced pianists should be able to master these pieces with some diligent practice. (Do I sound like a piano teacher? I am!!) The books are spiral bound (YEA!!!), and the layout is roomy and easy to read. I like all of the songs in the book, but my favorites include “All Your Dreams Come True,” “Release,” “Night Stars,” “Call of the Loon,” and “Cramer’s Song.” I also really love “Breathe Revisited,” an updated arrangement of Greg’s most popular piece. This is a wonderful songbook that I very highly recommend. It is available from www.GregMaroney.com and Amazon. The song titles, the keys they are in, and the number of pages are:
