Review by Kathy Parsons
Danny Wright Complete Music Collection is a spiral-bound songbook that includes thirty-three transcriptions of pieces from pianist Danny Wright’s vast library of piano recordings. The majority of pieces are Wright’s original compositions, but there are some arrangements included as well. The transcriptions were done by several different people and date from 1988-2014. This would be a beautiful collection with some solid editing and proof-reading. I played the book from cover to cover and found much of it unreadable because Danny plays all over the piano keyboard and there is very little use of 8va and 8vb, causing the pianist to frequently have to stop and count ledger lines. When there is a progression up or down to the high or low ledgers, reading them is possible, but starting seven ledgers up is not. One piece has the top note on the piano indicated with ledgers only. No one can read that on the fly. Many pieces are virtually unplayable because some of the chords span three octaves and are indicated to be played with one hand. I would have expected some tenths and possibly some twelfths, but not some of the multi-octave stretches. Also, there no page numbers other that those for each individual piece. The songs are arranged in alphabetical order, but page numbers would have been helpful in a book this size. I’ve been editing and proof-reading sheet music for a lot of years, and this book needs a lot of work. Many of the older songs have notes overlapping rests, notes overlapping notes in the opposite clef, etc. I really enjoy a lot of Danny’s music and was looking forward to having a collection of his sheet music, but I cannot recommend this one. The book is available from www.dannywrightpiano.com.
