Review by Kathy Parsons
I have been a big fan of George Skaroulis and his music for a long time, and have been wishing for years that some of his sheet music was available. At last, it is! George now has two volumes of his piano solos, spiral bound, and currently available exclusively from his website. The Essential Sheet Music Collection, Volume 1 contains six pieces from four of his CDs: “Coming Home” from Season Traditions; “Seaside,” “Resting Place,” and “Falling Leaves” from Second Nature; “Evangelia” (one of my all-time favorite Skaroulis pieces!) from Return To Homeland; and “Farewell” from Generations. Most of these pieces are quite slow and uncomplicated, although a couple of them are in the key of B (five sharps). There are a few stretches that are bigger than an octave, but because of the graceful nature of the music, any of those chords can be rolled (or broken) without interfering with the music. Rebecca Oswald did the transcriptions for both volumes, and she is the best I’ve seen. The notation is clean, crisp, and well-spaced so that it’s very easy to read. Upper-intermediate and early-advanced pianists should have no trouble mastering this music, and what a rewarding musical experience it is to play! Slow, elegant, and always incredibly beautiful, this sheet music will provided many hours of soothing piano music for the pianist and anyone who happens to be listening. Both books are also available as digital downloads. Very highly recommended!
