Review by Kathy Parsons
Steve Siu’s debut album is the first in a series (four so far) of collections of solo piano arrangements of romantic standards, pop songs, and show and movie tunes. A classically-trained pianist, Siu’s playing style is refined and sophisticated without being overly showy. It is fascinating to see how his pianism has matured over the past several years, and this collection is very enjoyable and easy to listen to. Siu usually includes a favorite popular classical piece, and this time it’s Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata”. If you love the theme from “Titanic” (“My Heart Will Go On”), Siu’s almost nine-minute arrangement is bound to thrill (personally, I can’t stand that piece, but I listened to it all the way through several times - a major compliment to Siu’s playing!). There are two pieces from “Phantom”, Sinatra’s “My Way”, “Somewhere in Time”, and “Candle in the Wind” to give you an idea of the variety of pieces. My favorites are “The Shadow of Your Smile”, “Unchained Melody”, and “Iris” from “City of Angels”, which is bolder and “bigger” than a lot of the selections. If you like familiar music played smoothly and lovingly as piano solos, you can’t miss with any of the Volumes of The Most Requested Collection. They are currently available from stevesiu.com.
