Steve Siu’s anxiously anticipated solo piano tribute to Elton John was definitely worth the wait! Siu’s elegant and evocative playing style gives a new interpretation to some of Elton John’s most popular and best-known classics and yet remains true to the originals. The selection of fourteen tracks spans from “Your Song” (1969) to “The Lion King Soundtrack” (1994), concentrating on John’s slower and quieter ballads. Steve Siu has impeccable playing chops, but he keeps the showmanship to a minimum on this recording, bringing out the melodies and emphasizing the timeless quality of the compositions. An excellent selection for a romantic dinner or quiet time relaxing, this album is also great to listen to with full attention. It’s a trip down memory lane for those of us who have been around for Elton John’s full recording career and a great primer for those who only know his later work. Titles include “Candle in the Wind,” “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” “Blue Eyes,” “Circle of Life,” and “Rocket Man.” Very enjoyable! Tribute is available from stevesiu.com.
