This collection of romantic piano solos is the second in a series of four to date. With two years between the first volume and the third and fourth ones, it is fascinating to see the artistic development in this exceptional pianist/arranger. Steve Siu is a classically-trained, Hong Kong-born musician who graduated with honors from the USC School of Music. He has always wanted to focus on arranging pop and show tunes, and does a masterful job. His style is not overly flashy, but he gives himself room to showcase his pianism as well as the emotional richness of his interpretations. This time out, the standards include “My Funny Valentine” (a favorite) and “Unforgettable; the show tunes include “All I Ask of You”, “On My Own” (another favorite), and “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina”; from the movies, “Theme from Ice Castles”, “An Affair to Remember”, “The Wind Beneath My Wings”, and others; and the pop ballads include Elton John’s “Your Song” (a beautiful sneak preview of Siu’s upcoming collection of Elton John’s pieces) and Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds” ( I know some of these were pop hits as well as in movies!). As he has done on other volumes, Siu also included a popular classical piece, executed as written. This time, he chose Debussy’s “Clair de Lune”, and plays it to perfection. There are thirteen tracks in all, and all are warm and inviting. If you are looking for some outstanding arrangements of popular piano solos, I highly recommend all four volumes.
