Review by Kathy Parsons
Volume 4 of Steve Siu’s Most Requested Collection shows an interesting growth and maturity of Siu’s solo piano playing style. Volume 1 is “a trill a minute” in a much showier execution. Volume 4 showcases Siu’s incredible technique with a more subtle and emotionally rich delivery of some of the most popular standards, show tunes, and pop pieces of the past fifty years or so. I don’t know what the time span was between the four CDs, but it couldn’t have been more than five years since the theme from Titanic is on the first one. I noticed quite an evolution that I enjoyed very much - the piano teacher in me is showing again! The selections on this CD include movie themes such as “Romeo and Juliet”, “The Godfather”, “Forrest Gump”, and “Dr. Zhivago”; show tunes such as “Memory” from Cats, “Sun and Moon” from Miss Saigon, and “Uninvited” from City of Angels (a favorite!); and standards like “Time to Say Goodbye” and “When I Fall In Love”. There are thirteen tracks in total, and all are played expertly and with conviction. Personally, I prefer the less-familiar pieces since I teach a large number of these songs, but it is always fun to hear a new interpretation, and Steve Siu is among the best! Steve Siu’s CDs are currently available from his website stevesiu.com and from 1-866-pianocd.
