Review by Kathy Parsons
Lisa Reagan has created a new video for "Coventry Carol" from her 2012 album, Noel. The video, which was directed by Jordan Mizrahi, is set in a large church with gorgeous stained glass windows, and features a ballerina and a harpist as well as Lisa Reagan and her wonderful voice. Quoting Ms Reagan:
“’Coventry Carol’ dates back to the mid-1500s and was a part of the Coventry Pageant, an annual performance in Coventry, England. In this pageant, Joseph receives a visit from an angel who instructs him to take his child to Egypt to protect him from Herod's massacre of the innocents. In our video, we chose to use a ballerina to represent these innocent souls."
Lisa Reagan has an extensive history with the Washington National Opera, but she has recorded and performed in a broad range of genres and styles. For this video, she is accompanied by the harp, flute and a little bit of piano, keeping her amazing voice in the foreground. "Coventry Carol" always feels tragic and mournful, as it should, and this arrangement and the video are stunning.
"Coventry Carol" video is available on YouTube and Vimeo. Don't miss it!
