Review by Kathy Parsons
“Waves” is a solo piano single by Dutch pianist/composer David Hordijk. Currently in his mid-20s, Hordijk started playing the piano at the age of eight and has been passionate about music all of his life. He released his first album, Touch, in 2017 and his second, Further, in 2019; “Waves” is from the second album. In his own words: “The piano has always been a safe place for me, growing up the youngest of five siblings. I think contemporary piano music can be a counterweight to the incredibly fast times we live in.” I agree!

“Waves” isn’t a complicated or flashy piece, but David infuses it with heartfelt expression. The repeated motif on the left hand suggests the constant ebb and flow of ocean waves while the right hand melody is peaceful and soothing in some passages and stronger and more powerful in others, trailing off at the end. It’s a fascinating and hypnotic piece, and I look forward to hearing more music by this very promising pianist/composer.

“Waves” is available from Amazon and iTunes/Apple Music as well streaming sites like Spotify.
