Heaven's Kiss is pianist/composer David Joseph’s debut CD. As the title implies, some of the music has a spiritual, anthemic feeling, while other pieces are more personal and introspective. All of the pieces are original and solo piano. Classically trained from a young age, Joseph’s compositions have a strong, full sound, and his playing style is polished and capable, if occasionally a bit aloof. A few of the pieces seem a little stiff, but when Joseph lets his heart open, as he does on “When The Night Cries” and some of the other tracks, there is real magic. At more than 8 1/2 minutes, this piece is a major part of the album, and I keep going back to it for another listen. The passion is profound and soulful and has an emotional connection missing in some of the more upbeat music. This seems to be a true and honest soliloquy, allowing the listener to share something from deep within without fear or holding back. If this level can be reached a little more consistently, David Joseph will rise to the top.
The CD opens with “Glory,” a big, joyful piece that I think would be very impressive in a live setting, but is a little brassy on the recording - perhaps an error in the recording process itself. “A Love Lost” is another piece that shows Joseph at his best. Its gentle sadness and vulnerability are open and palpable, confiding something very real. “You’re Free to Fly” also has this tender, sincere quality. “Winter’s Dawn” is a favorite with moments of crystal coolness and others of majestic beauty. The title track has a peaceful warmth and serenity. And then comes “When The Night Cries,” the gem of the collection. I think it is worth the price of the CD for this track alone - what a beauty!
