Review by Kathy Parsons
Sacred is a gentle, soulful, and heartfelt collection of traditional and original hymns arranged, performed, and composed for piano by David Tolk and a mostly acoustic ensemble (Tolk adds a few synth washes here and there). David Tolk’s recordings are always warm and optimistic, and Sacred is especially so. These songs are obviously very close to Tolk’s heart, and that communicates really well from the piano as well as the other instrumentalists (Steven Sharp Nelson on cello, Steve Lemmon on guitar, Daron Bradford on various woodwinds, and two violins and a viola). The approach to most of the songs is similar in style, giving the entire CD a pleasant consistency for an easy backdrop to other activities, but if you are in need of a mental massage or a tranquil hour of inspiration, Sacred will fill that need and leave you feeling peacefully transported to a calmer, more centered place. The well-known hymns include “Amazing Grace,” “A Mighty Fortress is Our God,” “Nearer My God to Thee,” “Sweet Hour of Prayer/Glory to God on High,” and “All Creatures of Our God and King.” Tolk’s two original compositions round out the collection very beautifully. The title song is is reflective and hopeful - almost sunny; piano and strings are featured in a lovely chamber ensemble setting. “Ode To Nature” is a soothing duet for guitar and piano, and could come only from someone who has found much peace and serenity in natural settings. Sacred is an exceptional album, and is a must-have for those who enjoy sacred and spiritual music in a quiet, peaceful style. It is sure to calm and refresh the soul. Sacred is available from davidtolk.com and northstarmusic.com.
