Review by Kathy Parsons
“See You Again” is a four-track solo piano EP by Indonesian pianist/composer Eunike Tanzil. Eunike released her debut album, The First of Everything, also on the classical Deutsche Grammophon label, earlier this year. That album features the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester playing Eunike’s original music.

Born in Sumatra in 1998, Eunike Tanzil moved to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music. She later earned a full scholarship to The Juilliard School, where she studied under the guidance of Oscar-winning composer John Corigliano. Eunike’s music has been performed by orchestras all over the world including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra, Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

“See You Again” has the artist performing her arrangement of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and three original piano solos played on a felted piano, which softens the effect of the piano’s hammers hitting the strings. It’s a beautiful and very soothing eleven minutes of peaceful piano music sure to calm the stresses of the holiday rush.

The EP begins with the popular “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” This arrangement is not complicated, but instead flows from the heart with deep emotion. It’s the softest and most beautiful arrangement of the song I’ve heard (and I’ve heard and played a LOT of them!). “See You Again” is also very gentle and soft, poignantly expressing a very tender musical “goodbye for now.” “A Quiet Light” could be similar to a piece JS Bach would compose if he were alive today. It makes me think of moonlight dancing on snow or a bright star shining on a cold winter night - very expressive and beautifully-played! The last of the four tracks is “See You Again (Dreamy Mix),” a slightly different version of the second track with more atmospheric reverb and perhaps some electronic effects. It’s a graceful and shimmering close to a wonderful EP.

“See You Again” is available to stream and download from Amazon and Apple Music/iTunes as well as on many streaming services including Spotify and Pandora. I’m really excited about this Eunike Tanzil and can’t wait to hear more of her music! Very highly recommended!
