Treasures of Light

2026 / Jim Ottaway Music
72 minutes
Review by Kathy Parsons
Treasures of Light is another amazing album from Australian electronic composer and musician Jim Ottaway. Clocking in at a very generous 72 minutes, eleven of the album’s twelve tracks were compiled from tracks dating as far back as June 2008; Jim completed the recording and production of the album in May 2026. The digital version of the album includes a bonus track - a radio edit of Jim’s recent single release, “Ancient Rainforest.” Like most of Jim’s music, the album was composed and recorded in his home studio on the Gold Coast of Australia in the foothills of Springbrook Mountain. Jim has released thirty-seven albums and a number of singles and EPs starting in 2004 and has won many international awards and nominations for his music over the years. I have reviewed most of his releases since the 2017 classic, Deep Space Blue, and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them! As is usual with Jim’s music, it’s impossible to put this album into one genre other than “electronic.” Some tracks are very upbeat and lively, some are more ambient and dream-like, and some are just plain fun and/or interesting!
Treasures of Light begins with “Tomorrow Never Comes,” a bright and lively piece with a variety of electronic sounds that mesh beautifully with the more “traditional” musical sounds - the start of an intriguing musical adventure! “Fragments of Fate” is a 2026 mix of an earlier piece that is both soothing and energetic. “That Lonely Place” very effectively blends more traditional piano/keyboard sounds with a strong beat and various “spacey” electronic sounds that evoke a variety of visual images while intriguing the ears - a favorite! “Climbing Rainbows” is as dreamy and magical as its title suggests with a relaxed tempo and gentle melody. “Exponential Progression” is another 2026 remix that takes us on a sonic expedition to unknown yet fascinating places. “Dreams and Visions” is quite a bit more on the ambient side with a relaxed yet driving rhythm and a variety of imaginative musical instruments of Jim’s own creation. “Strange Paradox” is another favorite with its driving exotic rhythms and wild array of sounds - both playful and intense. The title track calms things back down with grace and an ethereal beauty. I really like “Radiance of Truth,” too. It begins with the theme that weaves in and out in various forms and an almost march-like rhythm that changes frequently before becoming driving and more rock-like. The second half really cuts loose and makes it difficult to sit still in the chair! Why even try when you are treated to such an infectious groove?!?! The digital album comes to a close with a bonus track of the radio edit of Jim’s recent single release, “Ancient Rainforest.” This newer version is a little more than a minute shorter than the single, so not too much is left out and it makes a great, upbeat close to the album!
Treasures of Light is available to stream and download on Amazon, Bandcamp and Apple Music/iTunes as well as from many streaming services including Spotify and Pandora. I give it an enthusiastic both thumbs up!
