Review by Kathy Parsons
Finding Peace is the first album from pianist/composer Joshua Zimmerman in more than eight years, following his 2017 release, Crossroads. Finding Peace began as a collection of original piano solos with tracks inspired by significant events in Joshua's life, but after hitting a place where the music didn't flow as easily as expected, Josh decided to compose music about things in life that bring him the most joy - and the musical floodgates opened! The ten tracks are not about dancing on clouds or uncontrollable giggles, but focus on much deeper and more meaningful aspects of happiness and joy - his young children, his relationship with his wife, a rainy day, etc. The overall tone of the album is one of peace (hence the title!!!) and contentment with an emphasis on meaningful melodies and expression. None of the ten tracks are flashy or showy, but the depth of the emotions expressed carries the music straight to the heart. The album was recorded and mastered at Joe Bongiorno's Piano Haven Studios in Sedona, AZ on Joe's incredible Shigeru concert grand piano, so the sound quality is outstanding.

A Michigan native, Joshua Zimmerman started taking piano lessons at the age of nine and was playing at weddings and church services by he time he was twelve. He started teaching piano lessons a few years later and had his own private piano studio at sixteen. In 2019, he became the owner of The Piano Cottage music academy where he teaches. He is also a worship leader and an occasional performer at various venues.

Finding Peace begins with the title track, a piece about loss, healing, hope and trust - emotions we all experience after losing someone close to us. As the piece evolves, the emotions flow freely from one to another - much like they do in life. "Between Raindrops" is a musical depiction of Josh's journey as a musician after he released Crossroads. Reflecting on the ups and downs of those eight years, the music expresses a mix of tenderness, melancholy and inner peace. "Untainted Joy" was inspired by Josh's two-year-old daughter and overflows with a father's love. I think most little girls go through a phase of wishing they could be a princess, and Josh's older daughter asked him to write a song about one. Within the graceful "For a Princess," there is a tender expression of innocence and a playful spirit as well as unconditional love - a favorite. "Simply Be" is about moments shared with a loved one when time doesn't matter and we can completely relax be ourselves. Very tender and delicate, it's another favorite. "Familiar Arms" is a love song - pure, simple and overflowing with tenderness and warmth. Josh had this to say about the closing track, "Into Open Skies": "Life can present some pretty big challenges that can literally make it difficult to breathe at times, but there is so much beauty, love, hope and grace in everything if you just take a moment to stop to look for it." Light and optimistic, it's a great closing track for a beautiful and very expressive album!

Finding Peace is available to download and stream from Amazon and Apple Music/iTunes as well as on many streaming platforms including Spotify, Pandora and YouTube. Josh is also releasing videos for each track every two weeks after the album's release date of May 16, 2025, so be sure to check those out, too! Highly recommended!
