Review by Kathy Parsons
The Weight of Silence is a deeply personal solo piano album by Norwegian composer/ pianist/producer/ drummer Karelius Ihlang, also known by his stage name, “Eldrasil.” He was originally known as the drummer for the atmospheric metal project, Eldamar, a band recognized for its calm, ambient energy and emotional depth. Karelius has been a member is several other metal bands over the years, but then things started to change. Quoting the artist: “Over time, my creative path has shifted toward the piano, where I continue exploring that same sense of space and introspection through melody and silence.”

The Weight of Silence is a collection of nine original pieces and a cover of Johannes Bornlöf’s “As The Years Go By.” The music is melancholic and reflective, delving into stillness, loss and deep emotion with a blend of new age, neo-classical and ambient piano influences. The son of Gisle Røen Johansen, an acclaimed Norwegian saxophonist, flutist and composer, music became a big part of Karelius’ life at a very early age.

The Weight of Silence begins with “Troubled Flow,” something of a musical soliloquy where the artist is speaking the truth from the depths of his soul. Beautifully expressive and deeply passionate, it’s a great start! True to its title, the space between the notes in “The Weight of Silence” are almost as important as the notes themselves. Honest and uncomplicated, it’s a beautiful example of the effectiveness of simplicity. “Shadows in the Rain” expresses sadness and loneliness in a way that anyone can relate to. “Whispers in the Wind” is a favorite with its gently-flowing rhythms and heartfelt melody. Delicate yet very powerful, it’s a gorgeous and very emotional piece! (Sheet music???) “Tides of Tranquility” feels much like floating on calm water - or even on a cloud - completely at peace. “A Hopeful Dream” is something of a theme and variations, with the main theme evolving through a number of changes throughout the piece. “The Space Between Us” expresses a variety of powerful emotions from quiet sadness and introspection to anger and pain - also a favorite. “Loneliness” very effectively expresses feelings of solitude and isolation, again with heartfelt honesty that rings very true - also a favorite! “A Promise Once Made” looks back on what feels like a painful memory with regret and sadness - a powerful recollection! The last track on the album is Karelius’ arrangement of Johannes Bornlöf’s “As The Years Go By,” a beautifully reflective piece that fits right in with Karelius’ originals. (This cover piece is a bonus track and is not included on The Weight of Silence on Bandcamp*.)

I am so glad to have been introduced to the music of Karelius Ihlang, a very exciting young artist! The Weight of Silence is available to stream and download from Amazon, Apple Music/iTunes and Bandcamp* as well as on many streaming services including Spotify and Pandora. Very highly recommended!
