Echoes of the Canyon is the third full album (plus six singles!!!) that guitarist/composer Michelle Qureshi has released so far this year (2025); it is also her third album on the Wayfarer Music Group label. Rooted in the powerful stillness and layered acoustics of canyon landscapes, five of the eleven tracks on the album began as large-scale multi-instrumental works that were then reimagined as (mostly) solo guitar tracks. The eleventh piece, “Prairie,” is the first track on the album and serves as a prelude to the rest of the “suite.” Echoes of the Canyon is a fascinating concept album with music that is sometimes very melodic and sometimes very ambient and still. Hearing how the music changes from solo guitar to a variety of different instruments adds a dimension to the album that casual listeners may miss, so give it your full attention at least a couple of times to fully appreciate what went into creating the music!
An award-winning artist and composer as well as a classically-trained guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, Michelle Qureshi has released nineteen albums and at least forty-four singles and EPs since her 2012 debut. Her music is heard all over the world with tens of millions of streams on global platforms. Michelle also conducts her Harmonic Sound Immersions, which resemble “horizontal concerts” that are designed to be meditative and restorative experiences where Michelle plays a wide variety of instruments while participants relax and enter a healing, meditative state.
Echoes of the Canyon begins with “Prairie,” an orchestrated prelude that sets the peaceful tone of the album. “The Pines” is a quiet acoustic guitar solo that makes me think of gentle breezes in a forest and that wonderful smell of pine. “Beyond the White Pines” is a more orchestrated variation and is almost ambient with lush strings and other instruments, moving slowly and very peacefully. “The Day” returns to acoustic guitar, this time with some subtle atmospheric synth washes behind it - again, very peaceful and serene. “Let Go the Day” starts with cellos playing the simple melody, becoming more layered and ambient as the piece progresses. The solo guitar “With Grace” is one of my favorite tracks with its haunting melody and quiet sense of purpose. The more orchestrated “Grace” is much darker and more mysterious with cellos, choral voices and a variety of other instruments giving it a slight edge. A guitar solo, “Waiting” seems to express patience and a calm sense of resolve while the orchestrated “And So We Wait” has a more sorrowful, emotional feeling. “Within Sorrow” is a gently poignant, reflective and very beautiful guitar solo. “Sweet Sorrow” is more ambient with an electronic keyboard sound carrying the melody in places while washes of other instrumental sounds flow throughout and bring the album to a tranquil close.
Echoes of the Canyon is available on Spotify, Amazon, Apple Music/iTunes, and streaming platforms including Spotify and Pandora. Don’t miss it!
