Review by Kathy Parsons
Milana Zilnik's Piano Stories of The Little Prince is a solo piano retelling of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's classic book. (Originally published in France in 1943, it is one of the best-selling books in history.) A favorite book from Milana's own childhood as well as one she shared with her children, the incidents and characters from the book are lovingly interpreted (without words) in a variety of musical styles - something Milana is especially good at with her colorful playing and deeply emotional expression as well as her exceptional understanding of many genres of music. Milana's music was used by The Leipzig Ballet for their own production of The Little Prince and it's very easy to imagine dancers adding graceful movement to the musical interpretation of these fanciful stories.

Piano Stories of The Little Prince begins with "It's a Hat," a light but slightly melancholy piece that seems to reflect on the innocence and wonder of childhood. "The Little Prince" introduces the title character, a gentle soul who seems to be brimming with curiosity. "Asteroid B 612" is very open and atmospheric while "Baobab Problem" is dark and mysterious. "Forty-four Sunsets" reflects on the beauty of nature in an evocative cinematic style that is both delicate and strong. "Volcanoes For Cooking Breakfast" is a very intriguing title and the piece itself is mysterious with a rolling motion in the left hand and a simple but very heartfelt melody - a favorite! "Farewell To the Rose" expresses the pain and heartbreak of leaving a loved one behind - elegant and very emotionally powerful - also a favorite. Going in a very different direction, "Show Off" is playful and humorous, evoking images of circus clowns and magicians. Inspired by Debussy and music created for children by various romantic composers, the piece is playful and colorful with a variety of rhythms and musical themes. "A Drunkard" takes the humorous, playful approach several steps farther, depicting a very tipsy but totally lovable character. Quoting Milana: "It paints a vivid picture of a stumbling character, making fun of himself and ending up asleep on the floor." A fun and fascinating musical portrait! The album closes with "The Business Man," a portrait of relentless busy-ness and constant motion.

Fellow pianists will be delighted to know that a companion songbook will be released at the same time as the recording. I was asked to proof-read the sheet music and found it as delightful to play as it is to listen to!

I have to admit that I've heard about the book The Little Prince since I was taking French classes in school, but I've never read it. Milana Zilnik has convinced me with her music that I need to get a copy and read it from cover to cover. I have no doubt that having spent time with the music, the stories will feel very familiar. I think that says it all about how much I have enjoyed my time with this album! Very highly recommended!

Piano Stories of The Little Prince is available from Bandcamp, Amazon and Apple Music/iTunes as well as streaming sites including Spotify.
