Review by Kathy Parsons
As much as I like Ophelia’s debut CD, April Storm, I’m happy to say that Echoes ... Under the Sun brings us a maturing artist whose style is as eclectic as ever. More piano solos (in the first half of the album) and fewer synth strings, this CD is a winner from start to finish! There aren’t as many dark or turbulent moments as on the first CD, but the moods, tempi, and inspirations vary from piece to piece, making this a fascinating work.
The CD opens with “Again”, a swirling piano solo with a delightfully optimistic feeling. “New Beginnings” continues the lighthearted mood with subtle percussion and synth accompaniment to the piano; a gentle breeze and pastel yellow sunshine set to music. “Lullaby” and “Sweet Baby Sonatina” are full of love and tenderness for a new arrival. I especially like the second movement of the “Sonatina”, with the classical left hand and sweet melody. “Velvet Clover” is a lovely piano solo with the feel of an old spiritual. “Echoes Under the Sun” is a gorgeous two-movement piano solo. This first movement is flowing and a little bittersweet or nostalgic. The second is somewhat darker and faster, with a flowing left hand. This is my favorite track on the CD. The second half of the album is much more electronic. The piano returns from time to time, but as part of an ensemble rather than as the focal point. “Shooting Star” is an ethereal and atmospheric piece that borders on ambient - my favorite track on the second half of the album. I also really like “Prelude”. “Jump!” comes right out of Jamaica, and is full of rhythmic fun. “Ice 2000” is an updated version of one of the best tracks on “April Storm”. (Both versions remind me of Laurie Z. - one of my favorite artists.)
Echoes ... Under the Sun is an excellent CD! The varied moods and approaches give us a well-rounded look at the playing and composing styles of this exceptionally talented artist. Ophelia is quickly becoming one of my favorite composers, and I highly recommend her work!
