“What Child Is This” is a beautiful single release from pianist/composer/keyboardist Rick Sparks and he is offering it as a free download from his website through the end of 2019 as a Christmas gift. This track will be included in Sparks’ upcoming Christmas album slated to be released in the fall of 2020. Sparks’ description really says it all: “I love the traditional music of Christmas, so full of joy, hope & peace as the world celebrates the birth of the Christ child. I'm happy to release the single, ‘What Child Is This,’ one of my very favorite Christmas hymns. It evokes serenity and a beautiful sense of mystery that, for me, is an integral part of the season.”

The instrumentation for “What Child Is This” includes strings, wordless vocals, and vibraphone/bells. The tempo is slower than most arrangements, allowing the simple but haunting melody to surround the listener with warmth and a bit of magic. Sparks often refers to his recordings as “quiet music,” and this arrangement evokes a sense of stillness as well as feelings of hope and promise.
