Review by Steve Yip
"Tight" is the self-produced single by Samara Joy, the fabulously young vocal sensation who specializes in jazz and show standards from what many call the American Songbook. "Tight" is a great introduction to her work which is written by jazz legend Betty Carter. Her vocal range is awesome as she showcases in this much too brief of a song. The band on this single is professionally staffed by pianist Luther Allison, bassist Mikey Migliore and drummer Evan Sherman

In "Tight," one will hear her tremendous range from the low pitches to operatic tones. Like brillant practitioners who established the genre like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn, Samara’s voicings are rich, seamlessly velvety and driven by a deep dreamy quality. My jaw dropped when I first discovered her when I watched the 2023 Grammys where her album Linger Awhile was awarded Best Jazz Vocal Album and she for Best New Artist. I may be going a bit far that this 23 year old can be likened to another young contemporary as the Simone Biles of jazz vocals. The quality of her work is top notch, and we have a lot to look forward to in the coming years.

Her albums so far: Samara Joy (2021) and Linger Awhile (2022). And you will find a great number of her live performances and interviews on YouTube. Go there!
