Review by Kathy Parsons
From the Depths is the debut solo piano album from Soul Improvisations (Devorah Maho Lewin) and is a two-CD “sequential musical experience that guides the listener through various stages and emotions, as embodied in Psalm 130: ‘From the depths I called you…’” With a total playing time of 81 minutes, the ten pieces evolve naturally, expressing deep emotion as well as warm encouragement, and are placed in a playing order that that takes the listener on a journey to personal growth, healing and transformation. Devorah established Soul Improvisations with the mission of composing solo piano music to help uplift the spirits of others and foster recovery from trauma. No stranger to life’s many difficulties and challenges herself, Devorah’s music is melodic and graceful, as well as warm, soothing and welcoming.
Along with being a composer and pianist, Devorah worked as a lawyer for seventeen years before her medical conditions declined to the point that she had to stop in 2023. Several surgeries later, she has been able to rebuild her life to focus on her childhood love of the piano and composing. Lucky us!
From the Depths begins with “Keep Hope,” an 11 1/2 minute musical message of encouragement and the positivity to never give up no matter what. Light and almost conversational in some passages, darker in others, it’s a gorgeous beginning and stays true to its title from start to finish. Quoting the liner notes, “‘Be Still in Divine Power’ explores the inner strength that is found when remaining still and calm in recognition of an unlimited spiritual power, G-d, who guides our lives. Even though challenging experiences may be difficult to understand, our pause and stillness can serve as a reminder that there is a greater force at work and ultimate purpose behind our experiences.” The piece flows warmly and with grace, again offering heartfelt encouragement and hope. “Just a Little Light” was inspired by the idea or metaphor that even a small amount of light can dispel a lot of darkness. A gentle musical pep-talk, no words are needed at all - the piano conveys the meaning of the music perfectly! “Love From the Heights” is an “expression of divine love that is limitless, infinite and continuously present” - an anthem and a reminder. As its title indicates, “In Quietness and Confidence” reflects on a peaceful state of being while evoking feelings of stillness and inner peace. “Waking Up to Wonders, Modeh Ani” is dedicated to Devorah’s three children and reflects a Jewish prayer of thanks said while in bed before any other actions are taken and “expressing gratitude to G-d for restoring one’s soul after sleep.” “Spring Rebirth” is a fourteen-minute ode to “the moment when silence gives way to birds singing, when color returns to the fields and when the heart feels the quiet joy of renewal.” Warm and relaxed, gentle images flow throughout the piece, offering feelings of hope and renewal. “Variations in Loving Memory” is a composition built around themes of remembrance, “the passion of G-d’s love,” and the timelessness of loving memories. “Reflections on 39 Years” looks back on life so far while looking forward to what’s ahead, as well as “the simple beauty of being present in the moment with gratitude.” Poignant yet very warm and positive, it’s an inspiring piece! The album comes to a close with “The Liberation.” Again, quoting the liner notes of the album, “‘The Liberation’ expresses a joyous outer and inner freedom – the freedom to make choices, to heal and to move forward in pursuit of one’s dreams.” It’s a glorious ending to an outstanding album that’s sure to uplift your spirit and bring peace to your soul!
