Review by Kathy Parsons
I have reviewed most of Stan Berger’s albums (all but one, I think) and have loved them all. Those earlier albums all featured Stan on piano and various accompanying instruments, but his new one, Vogue Continental, is accordion with other backing instruments (primarily bass and percussion). It features twelve original tracks composed in a variety of world styles including waltz, tango and reggae. Although he is better-known for his piano music, Stan was the Western States Accordion Champion many years ago - and he hasn’t lost his accordion chops in the least! One of the things that really struck me the first couple of times I listened to Vogue Continental was how joyful the music is. Lively, catchy and upbeat, it’s almost as if this album has a big, very infectious grin on its face! Some of the tracks are very danceable, while others just make you feel good - and who couldn’t use a little (or a lot!) more of that?

Stan Berger earned a doctorate in composition from Claremont Graduate University in 1994. A longtime studio musician, composer, musical director and former pianist for Barry White, Stan released his first solo album, Kool Shoes, in 2010. With a background in so many genres of music, Stan brings a unique voice to all of his music.

Vogue Continental begins with “Cafe de Paris,” a light-hearted soundtrack to a friendly meet-up or even a romantic outdoor lunch. Bass and percussion add a catchy rhythm to the lively accordion lead. “Bossa Del Rio” has a dreamy smooth jazz vibe that will have you swaying to the music. I’ve never been to Paris, but “Paris in the Springtime” brings images of a relaxed and very beautiful city well-worth exploring. The lively, carefree feeling of “Polish Waltz” will have you tapping your toes or maybe even dancing! “Tango de Amor” is a favorite with its driving beat and energetic minor key. Somewhat more orchestrated, “Serenade of Love” would be perfect in a romantic movie! “Valser Italiano” picks the tempo back up for a joyful, playful waltz. “Midnight Samba” is another favorite with its sultry rhythm and exotic melody. A “Twilight Waltz” always seems so romantic - under the stars with that special someone. This piece would be the perfect accompaniment AND it features some really impressive finger-work on the accordion! “Vamos a Bailar” is Spanish for “Let’s Go To Dance” and is also a favorite. As I’m listening, I can’t sit still in my chair! The title track includes strings and brass as well as percussion and bass - again, a very joyful and uplifting piece! The album ends very appropriately with a piece titled “We Are One World.” A wide variety of musical styles and genres play into this lively anthem that needs no lyrics to get its warm and friendly point across. Bravo!!!

Vogue Continental is available to stream or download from Amazon and Apple Music/iTunes, and is also available on many streaming platforms including Spotify and Pandora. Give your spirits a lift with this excellent album from Stan Berger!
