Review by Kathy Parsons
Open is the sixth solo piano album from Stephen Wallack and contains ten original pieces that vary from quiet and reflective to more energetic and upbeat. Recorded on a Steinway S grand piano, the music explores how we as individuals can make the world a better place - a challenge that seems more daunting every day. I think Stephen's quote explains his idea well:
"The last couple of years have been an intense period of reflection and gratitude. Reflecting on the chaotic world that we live in, it can be difficult to find the beauty in the lives we each live. My personal journey has been trying to “open” myself up to new ideas, new people, and challenging myself to see life through multiple lenses. We all have gifts to share with the world that make it a better place, but finding that confidence, patience and grace can be easier said than done. OPEN is my journey to connect with a deeper self-awareness and a greater hope that we can all find that inner peace we so desperately need."
Open begins with "Faith," a piece that seems to express many feelings and ideas. Sometimes bold and confident, and sometimes much more subtle and reflective, it's a fascinating piece that goes in a number of directions without losing itself along the way - an intriguing start! Most of us have experienced at least one "Love Story" in our lives, and this one is bright, upbeat and enthusiastic - perhaps even dancing on clouds for joy! "Fall" is often viewed as a time of transition and change as the weather cools and colors become more intense and then fade. Stephen's piece with that title has a happy swirling energy sure to bring a smile! "Changes" is much more subdued and reflective, freely moving from one tempo to another as it moves up and down the keyboard - deep thought at the piano! "Ireland" takes us on a pianistic tour filled with wonder, beauty and even a touch of mystery. "Once Upon A Time" expresses the playful energy often found in fairy tales and other children's literature. There is no dark side or threat of any kind in this exuberant piece - a favorite. "One Last Run" goes much darker and seems to convey a wordless conversation that flows from one heart to another. As sad as the piece is, it's both powerful and very beautiful. "Storm," the last track on the album, begins very quietly and peacefully with occasional percussive accents. It gradually builds momentum and strength and then subsides to the end.
