We, the Funky, Vol. 1 is a five-track release from Los Angeles-based saxophonist (multi-instrumentalist, really!), composer and producer Wes Smith. Smith has performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in soul, jazz and pop music including Stevie Wonder, Booker T. Jones, Poncho Sanchez, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke; he also appeared in the 2014 film, Whiplash. Now stepping up as a bandleader for his first album of original music, Smith has assembled a stellar roster of musicians to collaborate with. The band includes Donald Barrett (drums); Maurice “Mobetta” Brown, Christopher Bautista and Michael Cottone (trumpet); Frank Abraham (electric bass); Sam Barsh (Fender Rhodes keyboard); Khrystian Foreman and Justin Kirk (trombone) in addition to Smith playing alto and soprano sax, flute, alto flute, Fender Rhodes and synths. Each of the five tracks features a different ensemble and mood, and all five are positive and upbeat. Smith sees We, the Funky as firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, as well as an album of strong melodies, harmonic depth, and inspired improvisation. Quoting Wes Smith:
“My time in Los Angeles has been good to me. This record is about the sunshine and joy of that experience — and about the relationships that have made my musical journey so special.”
We, the Funky, Vol. 1 begins with the title track, a compelling toe-tapper that will have your head bobbing to the soulful groove. Dueling horn and sax sound like they’re having a blast! “Sunrises” cools it down considerably and showcases Smith on both sax and flutes. Trumpet, drums, Fender Rhodes and bass complete the band on this one. “Baby Steps” captures the uncertainty and joy of new fatherhood through more of a smooth jazz styling. Flutes and sax again bring different voices to the music which also includes trombone, bass, drums and Fender Rhodes keyboard. Both mysterious and vibrant, “Ventura Penthouse” has Smith on Fender Rhodes as well as sax. Trumpet (Maurice “Mobetta” Brown) drums and electric bass add to the eclectic mix (Brown’s trumpet is amazing!). “Hdub Hiatus” cranks the energy level back up for a solid groove powered by trumpet, sax, drums, trombone, bass and Fender Rhodes. It’s a great closing to an excellent album!
We, the Funky, Vol. 1 is available on Bandcamp. Prepare to be impressed!
