Review by Kathy Parsons
Solo Piano: Selected Pieces is a collection of seven original piano solos by Garreth Brooke (aka Garreth Broke), a British/German composer and piano teacher from Frankfurt. The pieces were recorded on five different albums and EP’s and provide a fascinating and fun-to-play introduction to Brooke’s music. (If you are already a fan, you’re really going to love this songbook!) Available as a download or a paperback book, the pieces range from 2-6 pages (see below), none of which are very difficult. Most are fairly slow, and most are primarily single notes on each hand (there are not many full chords). The scores are well-spaced and easy to read, and fingering is provided for areas that are bit tricky. Phrasing, pedaling and metronome settings are included, making the songbook very suitable for teaching material. I proof-read the sheet music and can verify that it is as close to the original recordings as possible.

I am very excited about getting acquainted with more of Garreth Brooke’s music, and can highly recommend the songbook for pianists and students of an upper-intermediate and early-advanced playing level (and above). It is available from amazon.com and Brooke’s website.
