Natural Light for Piano Solo is the companion sheet music book for Louis Anthony deLise’s 2019 album, Natural Light. The first version of the recording includes additional musicians on most of the tracks, but a solo piano version of the album will also be released. There are eleven pieces on the original recording, and there are twelve pieces in the songbook, so I assume that the twelfth piece (“Three Little Dancers”) will be included on the solo piano version. Slow, somewhat ambient, emotional and very beautiful, all twelve of the pieces in this book are a joy to play.

Published by Metropolis Music Publishers in Belgium, the scores are printed on a light cream-colored paper stock and the book binding is stapled. Since this is not a thick book, it stays open on the piano and page turns are easy. All of the scores are well-spaced and easy to read. Dynamics and expression are thoroughly notated and metronome settings are included. Several pieces have chords with a reach of a tenth, but some of those can shift a top or bottom note to the other hand or the chords can be rolled (or shortened). As noted below, most of these pieces are quite short and the key signatures are not difficult. This music is fairly easy to play, note-wise, but the deep beauty and emotional quality of each piece will be found in the expressive playing of each pianist. Because of this, these piano solos would make excellent teaching pieces for learning to play with feeling and tonal color.
