The Redemption sheet music book is the companion songbook to Paul Spaeth’s 2013 recording by the same name. There are eleven tracks on the album and thirteen in the book because there are two versions of two of the songs: “Lullaby For the Mending Heart” for piano and cello duet as well as a solo piano version, and “Amazing Grace” for piano and violin as well as solo piano. “Prelude to a Lullaby” and “This Is Our Faith” are scored for duet versions only. In the back of the book, there are separate parts for cello (“Prelude to a Lullaby,” “Lullaby for the Mending Heart” and “This Is Our Faith”) and violin (“Amazing Grace”) so additional musicians don’t have to look over the pianist’s shoulder!

The timing in some of these pieces is tricky and advanced, but Spaeth has a very free and fluid playing style, and the scores reflect that. There are few, if any, reaches of more than an octave, and none of the songs are very fast. Metronome settings are included and dynamics are clearly marked. The layout of the book is roomy and the notation is crisp. Another plus is that the book is spiral bound, so it will stay open on the piano from the first time it is opened. I love the Redemption CD and am excited to be able to play some of my favorites, including “Passage” and “A New Beginning.” Early advanced and advanced pianists will find much to enjoy in this book - especially if they have access to a cellist! Recommended!
