Review by Kathy Parsons
The At Every Turn solo piano songbook is the companion sheet music book for Suzanne Herman’s 2026 solo piano album with the same name. All ten pieces from the album are included, transcribed by Suzanne Herman and proof-read by me. I can assure that the scores are as accurate to the recordings as is humanly possible. The music itself is something of a solo piano journal from a trip Suzanne took to Antarctica and what she experienced while there. The first three pages of the songbook include Suzanne’s notes about what inspired each piece, offering excellent insight into the soul of the music. There is also a short biography about Suzanne in the front section of the book.
The pieces themselves are not overly-difficult and are very expressive. A longtime piano teacher herself, Suzanne has included fingering for certain passages, metronome settings for each piece, and lots of tempo and expression marks to help pianists understand what she intended for the music even if they haven’t heard her recordings. The pieces are well-suited for advancing piano students of any age as well as for pianists at an upper-intermediate playing level and above. Songbooks (digital and physical) are available from Suzanne’s website, as are individual pieces (digital). They are also available from www.sheetmusicplus.com and www.sheetmusicdirect.com. Highly recommended!
