The Physics of Light songbook is the companion sheet music collection for Vicente Avella's 2022 solo piano album by the same name. All sixteen pieces from the album are included and are available to download from Vicente's website as a complete songbook or as individual pieces. In the forward of the songbook, Vicente explains:

"All the music on this album revolves around light; the physical properties of light. I went about creating the music in a way that would remain truthful and respectful to the science. That being said, I am not a scientist nor a physicist so the result is more of a reflection of my own life experiences as seen through the physics of light."

Like the qualities of light itself, the music is varied in tempo, mood and expression making it easy to pick a piece to suit your mood at any time. I thoroughly enjoyed playing the book from cover to cover to review it, but plan to return to the sheet music to be able to play it with ease and the expression it so deserves. Vicente Avella has worked on a lot of music for media such as television and films, so his music always has a colorful, visual quality that is perfect for this project. Sometimes dark and somber, and sometimes lively and radiant, Physics of Light is nothing short of a masterpiece!

I downloaded the songbook to my iPad, and the notation is very clean and clear. Phrasing, expression and metronome settings are all clearly marked. There are illustrated pages between a few of the pieces with bits of the cover artwork for the album - a welcome addition to the music! Most of the pieces are at an upper-intermediate to early-advanced playing level, making it suitable for pianists of all ages. It is also very suitable for teaching material for advancing students as well as for personal enjoyment. Very highly recommended!!!
