Review by Kathy Parsons
“Chasing Shadows” is a powerful and intensely emotional single by Spanish composer and multi-instrumentalist David Clavijo. Composed for piano and chamber strings, the piece is the prelude to David’s earlier track, “Metamorphosis” and reflects on “the courage it takes to face our own fears and wounds in order to achieve renewal and transformation” (quoting David Clavijo). The piece was inspired by David’s own deeply personal journey and is structured like a chase between the piano and strings, “building tension and release, much like the emotional pursuit of confronting one’s inner shadows before embracing a new chapter” (again, quoting David). The piece begins with a very slow piano solo, adding cello for a short, mournful prelude before a livelier rhythm leads into the main part of the piece. The piano and strings remain slow, mysterious and melancholy, while more strings are added very gradually. In the second half of the piece, the piano becomes brighter and livelier while the strings maintain a darker edge. It’s a fascinating piece of music and clearly demonstrates why David Clavijo has become one of my favorite artists!

“Chasing Shadows” is available to download and stream on Amazon and Apple Music/iTunes as well as on mainly streaming services including Spotify and Pandora. It’s a beauty!
