Review by Kathy Parsons
This very appropriately titled CD carries a strong sense of calm and well-being. At Peace is a gentle collection of original piano solos, and is the second release by Joe Bongiorno. They don't get much smoother than this! The melodies are made up of simple but well-developed lines. Most of the left hand accompaniment is done with gently rolling arpeggios and easy-going runs. On one of my CD players, it sounded like the left hand was the same in almost all of the tracks - nearly to the point of annoyance - but when I listened to it again on my other two players, I didn't notice that "sameness" much at all. Most of the tracks are at an andante tempo, so the pieces have a consistent feel all the way through. There are no jarring chords or striking rhythms - just this peaceful and optimistic mood. I especially like "The Subtle Touch", which is somewhat different from the other pieces starting in the upper registers and building to a quiet passion that is very lovely. "At Peace" is currently available from www.mellowsounds.com.
