Review by Kathy Parsons
“Ode” is a new single from improvisational pianist Mario Mattia. The piece first appeared on Mattia’s 2022 album, Selected Improvisations, Vol. 1 and was shaped by loss, memory and quiet transformation. At 11 1/2 minutes, the improvisation has plenty of time to explore and reflect, allowing the music go where it wishes. Mattia really pours his heart into this piece, allowing the music to very effectively flow from his own soul to the the souls of his listeners. It truly is a work of art.

Quoting Mario Mattia:
“‘Ode' is a deeply personal solo piano improvisation shaped by memory, loss, and quiet endurance. Performed in a single unedited take, the piece unfolds not as a pre-composed memorial, but as an instinctive act of remembrance — spacious, restrained, and emotionally direct. A recurring theme moves through the work, continually transforming as it returns, giving the improvisation a quiet architectural coherence. Its power lies in its patience: phrases emerge, recede, and reappear with the inevitability of lived feeling, suggesting that improvisation can carry the same structural weight, emotional coherence, and expressive depth as composition."

“Ode” is available on many streaming services including Spotify and Pandora. There is also a very hypnotic YouTube video. “Ode” is a soulful and beautiful piece and I highly recommend it!
