Review by Kathy Parsons
“Mother’s Day Proverb” is a new single from pianist/composer Matt Johnson. Released in honor of mothers around the world and their special day in May, the piece originally comes from Matt’s 2010 Reflections on...The Proverbs of Solomon, a huge project that features Matt’s piano improvisations as he reads The World English Bible translation of each of the thirty-one proverbs; “Mother’s Day Proverb” is the thirty-first in the series. With a playing time of twelve minutes, the single has been released as a musical audio book as well as an audio-only version that can be streamed and/or downloaded. The beautiful graphic for the cover artwork does not change in the audio book version, but provides a lovely backdrop for the words shown on the screen as well as Matt’s expressive voice reading the proverb and for his solo piano improvisation. It is interesting to note that Matt calls the music for “Mother’s Day Proverb” “Genre-fluid: Alternative Piano / Melodrama / Jazz Ballad,” making it very appropriate for a wide variety of settings.
“Mother’s Day Proverb” is available from Matt Johnson’s website as well as from Amazon, Apple Music/iTunes, YouTube, and many streaming services including Spotify and Pandora. Check it out!
