Review by Kathy Parsons
Singles Mingled is a collection of nineteen singles that pianist/ composer/ arranger/ teacher (and more!) Matt Johnson released between 2019 and 2025. I have reviewed almost all of the tracks as singles, but what a diverse and enjoyable listening experience it is to have them all in one place! Most of the tracks include at least some orchestration, but that varies with each piece. The piano's role also varies from track to track, so it's quite a diverse collection! Sometimes light-hearted and whimsical, sometimes deeply emotional, and everything in-between, this is a wonderful sampling of Matt's compositional and playing styles! The last track on the album is Matt's arrangement of the pop classic, "What The World Needs Now," that features the vocals of Shortcut Sunny. That track follows the very symphonic "Melrose Overture," so that gives you a small idea of the range of the musical styles on the album.
The cover artwork for Singles Mingled is also worth noting. It is made up of bits of the cover artwork from each of the nineteen singles to create a montage of sorts - very clever! A bit of Matt's "official" photo is right in the middle! Well done!
I can't review all nineteen tracks, but I'll mention some favorites. The album begins appropriately enough with "Opening," a joyful piano solo with several stylistic influences from rock to pop to jazz - a great start! The dramatic "Shipwreck" includes guitars, horns, strings, piano, percussion and more - very cinematic! "Nothing's as It Seems," the most-recent single is a blend of strings, a driving beat, piano and more. Matt refers to it as "a soundtrack...looking for a movie," and I agree! "Early Reflections" is mostly solo piano with a wistful, nostalgic feeling. "Surrender" begins as a graceful piano solo, adding light orchestration as it develops - a favorite! As its title suggests, "Laughed" is a bit of lighthearted musical sunshine - with a Latin rhythm! Horns, piano, hand percussion, bass and more tell the story - as do some chuckles mixed into the music. "Choctaw" has a Native American flavor with hand percussion and drums, flute, piano and strings - very dark and mournful, and also very beautiful. "We Have Toys Out Here" is just under a minute of pure fun! A gentle jazz ensemble piece, "Adam's Theme" was composed for one of Matt's sons. Subtitled "Smile," the group includes piano, flutes, percussion, bass and wordless vocals. "Hot Cup of Tea" begins and ends with an infectious giggle. The piano solo between the giggles is in a light country style. "She Didn't Mean To" is a sweet piano solo originally composed for a waitress who accidentally dropped a tray of food while Matt was playing a gig. A sweet blend of compassion and innocence flows throughout the piece. "Melrose Overture" is a "big" symphonic piece that is fully-orchestrated and very cinematic. A number of themes are woven together to tell a musical story. At just over eight minutes, it was quite a project!
Singles Mingled has its own website, which can be accessed at SinglesMingled.x on a Web3 IPFS-enabled browser. The album can also be streamed and downloaded on Amazon, Apple Music/iTunes, and streaming platforms including Spotify, Pandora and YouTube. As always, Matt offers his recordings and sheet music for free on his website. Very highly recommended!
