Review by Kathy Parsons
"Layla" is the third single from Peter Calandra's upcoming solo piano album, due out in March 2024. (The first single from the album, "Night Sky," was released on 12/15/2023 and the second one, "Spirit," came out on 1/5/2024). "Layla" is an improvised piano solo based on the coda of the song by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon. Very open and serene at the beginning, the piece begins to pick up the tempo as it approaches the mid-point, becoming more animated with a slight touch of gospel (but not hard-rock), and then finishes as gently as a whisper. It's hard to believe this great song is more than 50 years old, but it has earned the status of being one of the greatest rock songs of all time. Peter Calandra does a wonderful job of making it his own while honoring the original and giving it a new take.

"Layla" is available from Amazon, Apple/iTunes and streaming platforms including Spotify.
Both thumbs up!
