Review by Kathy Parsons
"Neon Beach" is a bright and lively jazz single from Pete Calandra and Straight Up and is their seventh single (so far!) for 2023. For this outing, the lineup is Calandra on piano, Dale Kleps on soprano sax, Howard Joines on drums, and Stomu Takeishi on fretless bass guitar. In the true spirit of jazz, the piece was recorded live with the engineer mixing it to two-track stereo as the band played - there were no "fixes" afterwards. The fun and excitement of a live performance come through loud and clear, and all four musicians have a chance to solo or at least take the lead within the five-minute playing time.

The piece begins with the band already in a groove, with sax and piano in the lead. Pete's first solo slows the tempo down quite a bit, but not for long! Kleps' sax takes flight several times, as does Pete's piano, with the rest of the group right with them. It's another great single from Calandra and company!

"Neon Beach" is available from Amazon, Apple Music/iTunes and many of the streaming sites as well as YouTube. Give it spin - it's a real day-brightener!
