Review by Kathy Parsons
"The Highlands" is a gorgeous single release by pianist/composer Peter Calandra. Performed on piano with ethereal synth washes, the piece defies being boxed into one specific genre. Perhaps neo-classical/ new age/ jazz/ ambient would about cover it! The single is a somewhat shortened (5 1/2 minutes) "radio edit" and there is a YouTube video of the full piece (just under 8 minutes) with stunning visuals of landscapes as well as of Peter playing the piece.

"The Highlands" begins very quietly and peacefully - perhaps describing a sunrise. It gradually becomes livelier and more vibrant, but never loses the tranquil, contented tone of being in a beautiful place. Much of the piece feels improvised, giving the music a sense of freedom and openness. As usual, Peter Calandra does not disappoint - quite the opposite!

"The Highlands" is available from Amazon, Apple Music/iTunes and streaming platforms including Spotify. The link for the video is to the left of this review.
