Review by Kathy Parsons
"Glass Half Empty" is the second single from Samer Fanek's upcoming album, Forever Elsewhere, and releases just about a month after the first one, "Fleeting Struggle." I have been reviewing Samer's music since his 2016 debut, Wishful Thinking, and love the way he combines piano and orchestral sounds as well as a mix of genres to tell his wordless stories. His first album or two were very reflective of Yanni's influence (I love his music, too!), but Samer has established his own distinctive voice and his music just keeps getting better! Born and raised in Jordan, Samer's music reflects the different cultures and musical styles that have been a big part of his life and give his music a distinctive sound.
Samer had this to say about "Glass Half Empty":
"'Glass Half Empty' is a self-aware song where I explore my occasional pessimistic mindset and choose to poke fun at it. It embraces those cynical thoughts we sometimes fall into and attempts to both acknowledge them and turn them into something more tongue-in-cheek. I've had moments in life where I've poured my heart into something only to watch it all fall apart at a moment's notice, almost acknowledging that the 'glass half empty' side was right all along. But after the initial sting, there’s something oddly freeing about finding humor in the absurdity of it all and wanting to raise a glass to it!"
"Glass Half Empty" begins with an almost playful attitude expressed with piano, guitar, strings and a strong percussion back-up. The orchestra includes horns for the second half of the piece, while the piano stays in the lead from start to finish. It's amazing how the mix of feelings and emotions that Samer described in words come through so powerfully. I'm really looking forward to the new album!!!
"Glass Half Empty" will be released on May 30, 2025. Links will be added as they become available. Very highly recommended!
