Review by Kathy Parsons
Reflections is the eighth album (plus a number of singles) from new age/jazz fusion guitarist/composer, Shambhu, and is a deeply introspective acoustic and electric guitar journey that weaves together themes of love, life and nature. Most of the ten tracks are Shambhu on acoustic and electric guitars, bass and/or synthesizers, but three tracks also feature Jeff Oster (flugelhorn), Leo Steinriede (electric guitar) or Geoffrey Menin (piano) (one track each). Four of the tracks were released as singles earlier this year and are even more meaningful within the context of the full album. Very calming and serene, Reflections offers listeners a refreshing escape from the tension and chaos of today's world as well as a reminder to "pause, breathe, and discover meaning at every step of their journey." I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Shambhu's albums, but there is something extra special about this one.

Reflections begins with the title track, an acoustic guitar solo that encourages us to pause and reflect and to "embrace the transformative power of introspection" - a very beautiful and meaningful start! "Openings" is Shambhu's first collaboration with young jazz guitarist, Leo Steinriede. They wrote the piece together and performed it as an "electric chill jam." Very slow, open and heartfelt, it speaks to the search for new opportunities in life. "Heart Bridge" returns to acoustic guitar with some atmospheric synth sounds and expresses Shambhu's philosophy that love is the ultimate currency in life. The piece feels very much like a warm, lingering hug, offering encouragement and optimism. As its title suggests, "Sunshine Serenade" is bright and cheerful - a celebration of a new day. "Destiny" is an acoustic guitar/piano duet with Geoffrey Menin, one of Shambhu's lifelong friends. Together, they explore the challenges and triumphs of life via the language and shared experience of music. One of my favorites is "Wishes," which is a little darker than the other tracks. Performed on acoustic guitars with synth washes, it is "a meditation on the hopes and dreams we hold, with a reminder to wish not only for personal fulfillment but also for the well-being of those around us, in recognition of our interconnected world." I love it! Acoustic guitar and flugelhorn might sound like an odd combination, but Shambhu and Jeff Oster created a soulful and very beautiful duet with "Montauk to Mexico." It is very interesting to note that Shambhu played his part on the East End of Long Island (New York) while Jeff played his from San Pancho, Mexico - technology at its finest (and most artistic!). Shambhu's acoustic guitar really captures the wonder and beauty of a clear night's sky in "Starscape" - so peaceful and relaxing! "Hope Eternal" is a tribute to Shambhu's late friend, Apeksha Ron Bacci, honoring his life and legacy through music. Guitar and synth blend beautifully while reflecting on the profound feelings of loss and love experienced as Apeksha passed. "Woodsy Green" is a piece for acoustic and electric guitars that reflects Shambhu's improvisational roots. Both spontaneous and soulful, it expresses a sense of peace and connection to the natural world while serving as a great closing to another great album from Shambhu!

Reflections is available from Amazon and Apple Music/iTunes as well as many streaming platforms including Pandora and Spotify. Very highly recommended!
