"A Gentle Rain Begins to Fall" is a beautiful solo piano single from pianist/composer Shoshana Michel. Recorded on a felted Yamaha upright piano, the sound is soft and slightly mysterious. (Felted pianos have a piece of cloth - usually felt - between the piano strings and the hammers to reduce the percussive effect of the hammers hitting the strings when the keys are pressed. Sometimes this also allows the sounds of the inner workings of the piano to become part of the music, but that isn't the case here. The sound is very soft and gentle - and very appropriate for this lovely piece.) Most of "A Gentle Rain Begins to Fall" has a flowing broken chord pattern on the left hand that effectively mimics raindrops falling into a puddle, pond or lake. The melancholy melody indicates that the rain wasn't enthusiastically welcomed or that it intensified sad feelings. I love the way it tugs at the heartstrings!
