“There are legends of people born with the gift of making music so true it can pierce the veil between life and death. Conjuring spirits from the past and the future.”
Sinners opens with these fascinating lines to this must-see movie. Spoken by Annie, a Hoodoo healer who is a major player in the film, sets the tone for Sinners’ blend of mysticism and historical symbolism that has roots in the Deep South during the Jim Crow period.
As of this writing, you may have heard about this groundbreaking Ryan Coogler movie (Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther), which premiered on April 14, 2025 in the U.S. It’s a film like no other in my opinion. It’s a mind-blower that has me still grappling with its meanings (plural), whose storyline is informed and infused with music. This movie’s amazing historical expanse includes an interfacing richness of various ethnic groups -- African American, white Southerners, the Choctaw, the Mississippi Chinese, and Irish.
However, let this exploration focus on the soundtrack. (The original movie score is released as a separate album.)
Allowing Annie to continue, “Conjuring spirits from the past. In ancient Ireland, in ancient Ireland, they were called Fili. In Choctaw land, they call them Firekeepers. And in West Africa, they’re called Griots. This gift can bring healing to their communities, but also attracts evil.”
Yikes. Thus sets the thematics for this eeriness that dominates the second part of the film. Did we say there are vampires in this film? But I don’t consider this a typical ‘horror’ movie. And I'm not gonna comment on this movie right now, and the mention of having a ‘horror’ component may intrigue you into seeing this movie. Now back to the soundtrack...
Sinners’ rich soundtrack that blends blues, gospel, jazz, and Irish folk music. In this movie, the music is focused and provides an influence greater than traditional movie mood-creating atmosphere. I remember an online film commentator who summarizes that Sinner’s musical selections capture one of the film’s themes of cultural fusion.
The Sinners soundtrack has 21 songs. Some of the most significant musical pieces are included below. References to the actor and blues performer Miles Caton are made as he holds a pivotal role (playing Sammie aka Preacherboy), musically and otherwise, in the movie. Some of the syntheses of the songs have been lifted from the web.
"This Little Light of Mine" – Performed by Miles Caton and a New Orleans youth choir, this song plays during Sammie’s return to his father’s church, symbolizing resilience and faith.
"Wang Dang Doodle" – A blues classic performed by Cedric Burnside, Tierinii Jackson, and Sharde Thomas-Mallory, capturing the raw energy of the opening night of the juke joint, which figures prominently in the movie where a lot happens!
"Travelin'“ – Sung by Miles Caton, this song underscores Sammie’s journey and personal struggles. Later, this song is performed by blues legend Buddy Guy, who appears as the elder Sammie.
"Pick Poor Robin Clean" – Performed by Jack O’Connell, Lola Kirke, and Peter Dreimanis, this piece highlights the film’s “exploration of race and ownership.”
"Old Corn Liquor" – A collaboration between Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson, this song of social oppression, addiction and rage from African American and Appalachian traditions that ties into the film’s themes.
“Rocky Road to Dublin” -- an Irish traditional folk tune that has an essential scene in the movie. Darren Holden and Brian Dunphy, both members of the High Kings, a modern Irish folk group, performed the track alongside actor Jack O’Connell, who plays the vampire Remmick. This vocal and instrumental rendition frames an eerie scene where Remmick leads a crowd of vampires singing this song in front of the targeted juke joint. Do check interviews online with film director Ryan Coogler’s analysis of why and how Irish music plays along with the Delta blues in this film.
The Sinners’ soundtrack and the Original Film Score are available in multiple formats. The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was released as a single CD, but there is also a vinyl edition and a digital version. Additionally, the Original Score by Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther, Oppenheimer, The Mandalorian) is also available from Sony Classical and Sony Masterworks.
