Wendy Loomis’ Gaudí Curves is a 13-track solo piano exploration of some of the important things that give life its meaning. Varied in style and genre (other than solo piano), some of the things that inspired the music are life, loss, travel, art, music, love, nature and redemption. All thirteen pieces are original compositions inspired by a wide variety of experiences, places and people. It's a listening experience that you'll want to savor again and again.

Based in San Francisco, Wendy Loomis has received an impressive number of awards for her music. She has performed as a soloist and as part of COPUS (founded in the late 1990’s with poet Royal Kent) as well as other duos and ensembles, and has released sixteen full-length albums and ten singles, trilogies and compilations. Gaudí Curves is her fourth solo album.

Gaudí Curves begins with the title track, a beautiful piece with a melody that Loomis says was whispered to her while she was in a cave at Park Güell in Barcelona. She calls it “messages from above.” The title refers to Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926), a Catalan architect and designer whose very distinctive style graces much of the architecture of Barcelona. Wendy quotes him on her website: "The straight line belongs to man, the curved line to God,” explaining the title of the album. “I Cry” expresses deep emotion stemming from the loss of Wendy’s creative and spiritual partner, Royal Kent. “Go Quietly, Softly” is a lively waltz that alternates between themes that are bright and upbeat to ones that are much darker and more mysterious. I really like this one! “Inside of Your Heart” seems to be speaking even though there are no lyrics. It is both honest and very sincere. “Forever” is another favorite and is also an expression of the emotions stemming from the loss of Royal Kent - one heart reaching out to another through music and memories. “You’re Fading Again” is a piece with a melody strong and distinctive enough to support lyrics, although I prefer imagining what the song might actually be about. I don’t think another instrument can describe rain nearly as well as the piano does, and “Front Porch Rain” proves that once again. The changing rhythms and intensity clearly range from a heavy rainstorm to the delicate patterns of a light shower. “Human Paradox” has a quickly-flowing rhythm that supports the poignant melody and gives it wings. I love the light, dancing feeling of the middle section played in the upper half of the piano keyboard. “Six Moons Preparation” is quite different with a strong Middle Eastern flavor and exotic rhythms - very intense, mysterious and intriguing! It and the closing track, “Only Now Remains,” are the piano versions of COPUS ensemble pieces created with Royal Kent’s poetry. “Only Now Remains” is a heartfelt ballad with a variety of jazz touches alternating with a quiet melody. It’s a great ending to an excellent album!
