Review by Kathy Parsons
...By Request is a collection of David Lanz’s early piano solos, most of which have not appeared in his other songbooks. Of the twenty pieces in the book, nine are from David’s 1983 Narada debut CD Heartsounds, three are from his 1985 Natural States, one from Nightfall (’85), four from Desert Vision (’87), two from Cristofori’s Dream (’88), and one from Skyline Firedance (’90). I’ve been a big fan of David’s music from the start, so it’s fun to add these songs to my sheet music collection and teaching materials. I was especially happy to finally see “Eagle’s Path” and “The Masque of Togaebi” in print and have a blast playing both. The arrangement of “Cristofori’s Dream” in this collection is the second version - the one that was released in sheet music form previously. The version of “Heartsounds” in other collections is a shortened version - the one here is complete. It’s really interesting to be able to see how David Lanz’s music has evolved over the past twenty-six years, and this book goes all the way back to when David was just beginning his career as a SNAG (Sensitive New Age Guy). Most of these pieces are at an upper-intermediate/ early-advanced level. Some have a reach of a tenth in the left hand, but those chords can be shortened for players with smaller hands. Recommended!
