Life and Death (Reimagined) celebrates the tenth anniversary of Argentinian pianist/composer Matias Bacoñsky’s first official album, Life and Death (2016), with a fully-orchestrated re-make of the album. Matias originally conceived the album with orchestra and choir, but at that time (age 21), he didn’t have the means to fully-realize his vision so he released it as a solo piano album. Three singles from the new album have been released this year, all of which I reviewed: “Death of a Dream (Reimagined),” “Never Lose Hope (Reimagined)” and “My Nightmare (Reimagined).” Links to those reviews (and others) are available on Matias’ Artist Page on MainlyPiano.com).

In brief, Matias describes the concept of the story:

“WHAT IF, IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ORDINARY DAY, YOU RECEIVED AN UNEXPECTED PHONE CALL- ONE THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING? A VOICE ON THE OTHER END TELLS YOU THAT THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE MAY NOT HAVE MUCH TIME LEFT, AND THAT IT MAY BE TIME TO SAY THE LAST GOODBYE. IN THAT MOMENT, REALITY SHATTERS. THE FUTURE YOU IMAGINED TOGETHER DISAPPEARS, MARKING THE DEATH OF A DREAM YOU NEVER THOUGHT COULD END SO ABRUPTLY.”

The story is complex and the music expresses a wide range of emotions - from very dark and despairing to hopeful acceptance. The solo piano version is very expressive in its stripped-down essence, but this orchestrated version is a cinematic powerhouse. The piano remains the driving force behind the music, but the orchestra and choral voices add much deeper emotions and richer tonal colors. A true musical story-teller, all of Matias’ albums have told stories - most notably his trilogy: When the World Ends (2018), Epochal (2021) and New World (2025).

All twelve of the song titles on this album end with “(Reimagined)” to differentiate from the first album’s titles, but in this review, I’ll leave the word off. “The Last Goodbye” poignantly expresses sadness, loss and disbelief. The piece becomes more orchestrated as it progresses, keeping the piano in the foreground throughout. “Death of a Dream” goes much darker with feelings of tragic loss and grief. As the title suggests, “Contemplation” seems to be trying to imagine what comes next. Soaring strings enhance the heartfelt emotions expressed at the piano. Rolling broken chords in the deep bass of the piano make the heartbreaking melody of “My Nightmare” even more compelling. “Believe” lightens the mood considerably with feelings of hope and joy. “Stay With Me” is a heartfelt plea as the loved one slips away - very dark and intense. “Without You” expresses deep loss and a lack of direction for going forward - heartbreaking! The last track on the album is “This Is Not the End.” Again quoting the “Concept Story”:

“LIFE IS BRIEF, EVERY MOMENT IS PRECIOUS, AND DEATH IS NOT AN ENDING, BUT A PASSAGE - PERHAPS THE DOORWAY TO ANOTHER WORLD, WHERE LOVE CONTINUES BEYOND THIS LIFE.”

In the music, hope returns as well as the will to move forward after tremendous loss and sorrow. While this is far from a joyous piece, you can feel the will to go on.
