Review by Kathy Parsons
The Immortal” (“Portada”) is the first single from an upcoming album by Argentinian pianist/composer Matias Baconsky. The new album is a continuation of the dark and emotional tale created in Baconsky’s 2018 album, When the World Ends, and tells the story of a man who manages to survive the end of the world. Unlike Baconsky’s previous releases, “The Immortal” is fully orchestrated with the piano in the lead most of the time. Dramatic and very powerful, “The Immortal” is a tantalizing sample of what’s to follow later in the year! At this point, Baconsky isn’t sure if the album will be solo piano, orchestrated with piano or a combination.

“The Immortal” begins with strings painting a stark, bleak picture of what remains of the world after a catastrophic event. The music rapidly becomes more intense as bells chime, percussion is added, and the piano is played in the deep bass of the piano. The piano comes into more focus as it plays a mournful pattern with percussive accents in the low bass while strings also intensify. Both then become mournful before gathering energy, determination and anger (my interpretation). The piece ends as the piano quietly trails off.

Matias Baconsky packs a lot of visual, emotional intensity into 5 1/2 minutes, and I’m really looking forward to hearing the full album! “The Immortal” is available from Amazon, iTunes and various streaming sites. Check it out!
