Review by Kathy Parsons
Night Mist is an eleven-track album of quiet, soothing piano solos and piano-based pieces by Peter Calandra. All of the tracks were released as singles between November 2022 and May 2025, but how nice it is to have them all in one place! Peter's choice of playing order is perfect, inviting the listener to take a deep breath (or two or three!) and get lost in the beauty of the music. Peter can rock with the best of them, but this collection features his more meditative and sometimes ambient work. With the world seeming to get crazier every day, it's such a relief to have music like this to unwind and decompress with!
Peter Calandra is the most-reviewed artist on MainlyPiano.com. I started reviewing his music in 2013 and love the depth and versatility of his music as well as his amazing artistry. In addition to composing music for his own albums and singles, he creates music for films, television, and advertising and has played keyboards in some of the biggest shows on Broadway. He also teaches at the college level in New York. A musical jack-of-all-trades, Peter is also 'way up there on my own list of favorite artists!
Night Mist begins with "Winter Song," a gorgeous piano solo that reflects on the peaceful beauty of light dancing on newly-fallen snow, the warmth of a fire in the fireplace, and the comfort of a cozy quilt paired with a hot cup of cocoa (my interpretation, of course!). "Peaceful Valley" is much more orchestrated, offering a cinematic portrait of a vast open space and all that nature has to offer in such a tranquil setting. "Whispers Of The Dawn" returns to elegant solo piano in the soft pastel tones of an early morning sky. "Mohonk Morning" is one of the older pieces and features piano with orchestration - also very descriptive and cinematic. "Autumn Nights" was played on a felted piano, giving it a very light and delicate sound that brings out the peaceful quality of the music. "Starlit Night" is one of the more ambient pieces on the album. Some of the instrumentation sparkles like stars in a dark sky and I would guess that the music was inspired outside of the city where stars can be seen as the twinkling, vibrant gems of the sky that they are. The title track has electronic enhancements that create a mysterious backdrop behind the relaxed but soulful piano improvisation. I've walked the beach in dense fog, and there is an aura of mystery that swirls around you when you can't see more than a couple of feet ahead of you. Peter's musical interpretation of those moments is perfect! "The Heart of Mount Seleya" is spare, mysterious and very beautiful with just enough pedal or reverb to give it a slightly other-worldly feeling. The very ambient "Sweet Symphony" is mostly strings that suggest the free-form movement of clouds or dense fog - very peaceful! "Veiled In Time" is solo piano with elements of both classical and jazz stylings that combine to create a relaxed, dreamy mood. "Love's Embrace" brings the album to a close with a piano solo that expresses the freedom and spontaneity of an improvisation along with the warmth of a heartfelt conversation. It's a great ending to an outstanding album!
Night Mist will be released on May 16, 2025. Links will be added as they become available. Very highly recommended!
