"Winter Song" is the first solo piano single from Peter Calandra this year (he has also released two singles with his group, Pete Calandra and Straight Up), but with a solo piano album due to release later in the spring, I suspect there will be more solo piano singles to tantalize us between now and then - VERY good news, indeed! The first part and ending of "Winter Song" feel very much like dreamy, reflective improvisations that express the stillness and peace of many winter days and nights - especially when it's snowing. Near the end, a brighter, jazzier theme emerges that swirls and dances before quieting and ending the piece with a gentle sparkle.
