Six Waves is the twenty-sixth album from multi-award-winning French composer/artist Thierry David. Based on "sonic reverberated sculptures," the six tracks are a fascinating combination of the ambient, experimental and cinematic styles that have made David's career so remarkable. Sometimes atmospheric, sometimes strongly rhythmic, and often a mix of styles and elements, the electronic soundscapes on this album take listeners on a sonic journey from the ocean floor to the farthest reaches of space. Entrenched in both classical music and jazz while growing up, Thierry David has also lived in several parts of the world and experienced first-hand the music of a variety of cultures. All of those influences are apparent in his music. The six tracks on this album range from just over five minutes to 10 1/2 minutes, giving the music plenty of time to evolve freely and organically.

Quoting Thierry David: “Since I have been feeling the essential need to compose, I have strived to create an imaginary universe where ambient sounds merge with rhythmic patterns and where harmonic sequences weave with pulsating melodies allowing the listener to plunge into a personal intimate atmosphere conducive to meditation, peace and serenity.”

Six Waves begins with the darkly mysterious "Causality," a piece that stays mostly in the bass range with an electric guitar freely weaving in and out of the more ambient elements that include nature sounds, keyboards, a strong bass and wordless vocals. "Into the Wave Axis" has a repeating bass pattern that runs through most of the piece along with electric guitar and various ambient sounds. The bass enters a minute or so into the piece and keeps it grounded and earthy while the other instrumentation feels more ethereal and otherworldly. "Elliptical Tales" begins with a space-music feeling before a gentle keyboard melody enters, followed by a strong rhythmic pattern that comes and goes. The piece gives me the feeling of floating effortlessly through a mysterious but non-threatening darkness, very comfortable yet fully aware. "Ultrasonic Vibes" begins with very dark atmospheric sounds before a strong, catchy rhythm takes the lead. It's an odd but magical juxtaposition that works! The second movement of the piece drops the rhythm temporarily, but it re-emerges slightly changed with the electric guitar weaving in and out. The music continues to evolve, adding and subtracting sounds while maintaining the feeling of deep space. "Submarine Whispers" is another hypnotic blending of ambient sounds and a powerful rhythmic pulse. "The Sixth Wave" floats peacefully on air as it gently soothes and relaxes, bringing this fascinating album to a close.

Six Waves is available on Amazon, Apple Music/iTunes and streaming platforms including Spotify and Pandora. Highly recommended!
