Review by Kathy Parsons
"Ritorno" is the opening track on Carol Comune's 2019 solo piano EP called From the Heart. The title is the Italian word for "return" and the piece overflows with sadness and longing. This is not a difficult piece to play, but understanding the expressiveness of the piece and playing it with deep emotion makes all the difference. "Ritorno" is composed in the key of D minor (1 flat), and the left hand is mostly a repeated pattern with variations in the timing throughout the piece's five pages. There are some very small differences between the score and the recording, and those are in the left hand - some of the Ds are in a different octave and some of the timing is slightly different - not big differences at all, and they are likely the result of getting caught up in the emotional quality of the music while recording it.
There are only a few chords in the piece and there are no reaches of more than an octave. Pedal markings are clear, as are the expression and dynamics. Pianists at an upper-intermediate playing level should have no problem mastering this beautiful piece, and I would think that pianists at any level above upper-intermediate would enjoy the emotions expressed in the music. Ms Comune is a longtime piano teacher, and "Ritorno" would be an excellent teaching piece for advancing students - especially teens and adults.
Carol Comune's sheet music is available from her website. Highly recommended!
