Review by Kathy Parsons
“Carousel” is the sheet music for the title track from David Lanz’s upcoming solo piano album, and what a great piece it is! Very lively and upbeat, the music expresses the circular movement of the carousel itself as well as the up and down motion most riders get to experience. I played the sheet music (for proof-reading) before I listened to the track, and played it quite a bit slower, which also works, but I really do like the infectious energy in the recording!

The piece is composed in the key of D major (2 sharps) and is seven pages. Some of the themes within the piece repeat somewhat, so that simplifies learning it a bit. There are no reaches of more than an octave, and the layout is very well-spaced and easy to read. My piano students always loved playing the cross-overs in some of David’s sheet music, and this piece has some of those where the right hand crosses over into the lower bass clef. Fun! I would place the playing level of the piece at upper-intermediate.

“Carousel” sheet music and the single recording are available to download only from David Lanz’s Shopify store on his website. There is also a wonderful video for this piece to get you in the mood! Highly recommended!
